Entrepreneurs in India: Are they missing on creating differentiators?

Over last few years there have been so many startups coming up in India that it has become extremely difficult to differentiate amongst them. So you really don’t find many sectors which are still unexplored but that also means that there’s lots of scope of innovation. Sectors like online travel which wasn’t a hot bed for startups a few years back now has more than 15 competitors in India providing services from booking tickets online to booking hotels. A year back a bus ticketing website would have been a dream – a far fetched one - but today you have websites like RedBus.in, ticketwala.com, ElineBus.com and many similar websites providing services.

The point about differtiation is well put. However, in categories where customer loyalty is low (as in online air ticketing), shoppers tend to scout for the best value offering and choose based on cost alone. In the Ticketvala.com example, perhaps the wider range of services they offer...hotels, car hire etc may give the positioning advantage ('more than just bus tickets, a one stop travel service). Your thoughts?

nuleaf - I think you are right! But it is not always correct to increase your spectrum unless you are able to keep the quality levels high, which would mean that you might offer bus tickets, hotels, etc. but you might not be preferred due to the better quality of a redbus which only caters to bus service. Also, it depends on the target market - if today market for bus tickets is higher than despite offering hotel registration, most of us would like to check at redbus as it would be more user friendly.

The key differentiator with www.elinebus.com is that they offer waiting list tickets when the tickets are not available. Their customer service team works behind the scenes to confirm the ticket. They also offer car and hotel bookings alongside bus tickets. This is good provided the service levels are good.
